Service Description

Berries are a wonderful & tasty way to start foraging, especially if you have young ones interested in helping out! This class will cover the most common berries and roses along with a few other seasonal flowers or plants that we find along the way, and we always do our best to relate what you’re learning to common grocery store items and familiar foods. Our introductory classes cover safety as a main focus, and we will spend time learning what cautions to take, how to be aware of dangers, and how to safely explore new wild foods! This class is an excellent companion to our “Foraged Tea: Sips & Sourcing” classes where you’ll get to taste several types of tea or to our second level of more in-depth ID “Berries, Brambles & Roses” which includes things like cherry trees, blueberries & huckleberries. DeJon Vineyard has a 20-acre nature preserve adjacent to their winery tasting room. We will meet in the parking lot, then take a short walk to the nature trail, and explore a permanently protected space that has been carefully restricted to protect the marshland. Be prepared for a damp trail, birds so close you can touch them, and the beauty of spring flowers. TERRAIN: This is a protected marshland area maintained by Ecotone. The trail can be marshy, so we do recommend hiking boots or waterproof shoes. PARKING & FACILITIES: Follow the long gravel drive along the vineyard, and park in front of the tasting room. Do not park at the house. Bathrooms available when the winery opens at noon, and we encourage you to support their business with a purchase. They do have locally-made snacks as well. WHAT TO BRING: We always recommend dressing for the weather and being prepared to hike a bit outdoors. You should also bring your phone to take pictures with and a notebook. Large parts of this location are unshaded. Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat for shade. WHAT ELSE TO KNOW: DeJon Vineyard is dedicated to protecting the natural surrounding and lifting up local businesses. Open at noon every day, they frequently have live music, and you can purchase full bottles from their tasting room which is spacious, warm, and welcoming.
