Each season will help you explore plants in their various growing stages, flowers as they open and close, and mushrooms as they quickly appear and fade. The more exposure to these fine edible and medicinal plants that you can get, the more comfortable you will feel using them as your own foraged ingredients, and the more confidence you will gain about how to buy from trusted sources. Many of our guides even offer their own products that we fully endorse. These walks are perfect for reinforcing your knowledge from other classes as well as introducing you to seasonal sightings of plants and fungi. By developing a working knowledge of the life cycle of nature you’ll hone your own foraging skills into a state of productivity instead of relying on luck. Casual in form, these are a great time to ask questions to high-level professionals. DeJon Vineyard has a 20-acre nature preserve adjacent to their winery tasting room. We will meet in the parking lot, then take a short walk to the nature trail, and explore a permanently protected space that has been carefully restricted to protect the marshland. Be prepared for a damp trail, birds so close you can touch them, and the beauty of spring flowers. TERRAIN: This is a protected marshland area maintained by Ecotone. The trail can be marshy, so we do recommend hiking boots or waterproof shoes. PARKING & FACILITIES: Follow the long gravel drive along the vineyard, and park in front of the tasting room. Do not park at the house. Bathrooms available when the winery opens at noon, and we encourage you to support their business with a purchase. They do have locally-made snacks as well. WHAT TO BRING: Large parts of this location are unshaded. Be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat for shade. WHAT ELSE TO KNOW: DeJon Vineyard is dedicated to protecting the natural surrounding and lifting up local businesses. Open at noon every day, they frequently have live music, and you can purchase full bottles from their tasting room which is spacious, warm, and welcoming.
